Dog bloat symptoms

Unproductive retching plus a tight swollen belly is not a wait-and-see GI upset.

Do this first

ScenarioBloat / GDV (gastric dilatation-volvulus)
Vet vs poison control vs ERThis is an ER surgical emergency, not a poison-control case. Do not delay for a hotline consult unless a toxin was also involved. Minutes matter.

Immediate action steps

  • Treat unproductive retching, a swollen hard abdomen, and sudden distress as an emergency
  • Do not offer food, water, or attempt home decompression
  • Call the nearest emergency clinic while preparing to leave immediately
  • Keep the dog as calm as possible during transport
  • Tell the ER you are concerned about bloat or GDV so they can prepare

Classic pattern

Repeated unsuccessful attempts to vomit, a distended hard abdomen, restlessness, and sudden distress are the pattern to take seriously.

Deep-chested large breeds are at higher risk, but any dog with this pattern needs emergency evaluation.

Do not finish the differential at home

Owners lose time debating food indiscretion versus bloat. The ER can sort it with imaging and exam.

Call ahead and say you are worried about GDV.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Contact your vet for anything urgent or unclear.

FAQ

My dog passed some gas and seems better. Cancel the ER?
If bloat was on the table, still get examined. Partial improvement can mislead.
