Dog’s belly is swollen and hard

A tight, enlarging abdomen with discomfort is an ER exam, not a wait-for-morning swelling.

Do this first

ScenarioBloat / GDV (gastric dilatation-volvulus)
Vet vs poison control vs ERThis is an ER surgical emergency, not a poison-control case. Do not delay for a hotline consult unless a toxin was also involved. Minutes matter.

Immediate action steps

  • Treat unproductive retching, a swollen hard abdomen, and sudden distress as an emergency
  • Do not offer food, water, or attempt home decompression
  • Call the nearest emergency clinic while preparing to leave immediately
  • Keep the dog as calm as possible during transport
  • Tell the ER you are concerned about bloat or GDV so they can prepare

Pair the belly with other signs

Add unproductive retching, restlessness, pale gums, or collapse to your triage call — those details matter.

Trauma, fluid buildup, and GDV can all present with abdominal enlargement. The ER sorts causes.

Handling

Minimize pressure on the belly. Use a sling or board if walking is hard.

Do not push on the abdomen to “check.”

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Contact your vet for anything urgent or unclear.

FAQ

Could it be just gas?
Possibly — but sudden hard distension with distress is not a home diagnosis. Get examined.
