Nonproductive retching in dogs: ER now?

Nonproductive retching plus distress is an ER question, not a curiosity.

Do this first

ScenarioBloat / GDV (gastric dilatation-volvulus)
Vet vs poison control vs ERThis is an ER surgical emergency, not a poison-control case. Do not delay for a hotline consult unless a toxin was also involved. Minutes matter.

Immediate action steps

  • Treat unproductive retching, a swollen hard abdomen, and sudden distress as an emergency
  • Do not offer food, water, or attempt home decompression
  • Call the nearest emergency clinic while preparing to leave immediately
  • Keep the dog as calm as possible during transport
  • Tell the ER you are concerned about bloat or GDV so they can prepare

High-concern combinations

Retching without producing material, abdominal distension, restlessness, and large deep-chested body type raise GDV concern sharply.

Even without a textbook breed, the combination deserves emergency evaluation.

Lower-concern but still call

Occasional gagging after leash pulling may be different — but repeated unsuccessful retching is not “occasional.”

When unsure, call an ER nurse and describe exactly what you see.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Contact your vet for anything urgent or unclear.

FAQ

How many retching attempts before we leave?
Do not wait for a count threshold if the dog is distressed or the belly looks swollen. Leave.
