Large breed dog bloat risk: act on signs

Risk is higher in many deep-chested breeds. That means a lower threshold to leave when classic signs start.

Do this first

ScenarioBloat / GDV (gastric dilatation-volvulus)
Vet vs poison control vs ERThis is an ER surgical emergency, not a poison-control case. Do not delay for a hotline consult unless a toxin was also involved. Minutes matter.

Immediate action steps

  • Treat unproductive retching, a swollen hard abdomen, and sudden distress as an emergency
  • Do not offer food, water, or attempt home decompression
  • Call the nearest emergency clinic while preparing to leave immediately
  • Keep the dog as calm as possible during transport
  • Tell the ER you are concerned about bloat or GDV so they can prepare

Risk is not destiny

Higher risk means earlier action on signs, not constant panic on quiet days.

Ask your veterinarian in advance which ER you would use after hours — write the number in your Emergency Passport.

Post-meal rest myths

Feeding and exercise habits are worth discussing with your vet for prevention. They do not replace ER care once signs begin.

If signs start after a meal, say when the meal was.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Contact your vet for anything urgent or unclear.
