Wasp sting on a dog

Wasps can sting more than once. Move to safety, then assess swelling and breathing.

Do this first

ScenarioInsect sting / allergic reaction
Vet vs poison control vs ERLocalized mild swelling can often be directed by your regular vet by phone. Facial swelling, hives with lethargy, vomiting, or breathing changes are ER now. Poison control is secondary unless a toxin was also involved.

Immediate action steps

  • Move to a safe area away from further stings
  • If a stinger is visible at the skin surface, scrape it away horizontally
  • Watch for facial swelling, hives, vomiting, collapse, or breathing change
  • Call your veterinarian or ER immediately for swelling of the face, throat, or any breathing effort
  • Do not give human antihistamines or epinephrine unless a veterinarian has already prescribed a plan for this pet

Nest scenarios

If you disturbed a nest, get pets and people inside. Multiple stings change triage.

Do not spray nests during the medical crisis — handle the pet first.

Mouth and tongue stings

Stings inside the mouth raise airway concern. Drooling and pawing are clues.

Call the ER early for oral stings.
