Dog stung in the mouth

Oral stings get a low threshold for emergency evaluation because swelling can affect breathing.

Do this first

ScenarioInsect sting / allergic reaction
Vet vs poison control vs ERLocalized mild swelling can often be directed by your regular vet by phone. Facial swelling, hives with lethargy, vomiting, or breathing changes are ER now. Poison control is secondary unless a toxin was also involved.

Immediate action steps

  • Move to a safe area away from further stings
  • If a stinger is visible at the skin surface, scrape it away horizontally
  • Watch for facial swelling, hives, vomiting, collapse, or breathing change
  • Call your veterinarian or ER immediately for swelling of the face, throat, or any breathing effort
  • Do not give human antihistamines or epinephrine unless a veterinarian has already prescribed a plan for this pet

Clues

Sudden yelp while sniffing flowers, pawing at the mouth, drooling, and tongue swelling are classic.

Do not offer ice cubes to chew if swallowing seems risky.

Transport

Call ahead. Keep the dog calm; excitement can worsen breathing work.

If breathing worsens on the way, update the ER.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Contact your vet for anything urgent or unclear.
