Hit by car: signs of internal bleeding

Internal bleeding is why wait-and-see fails after blunt trauma. Learn the signs — then still get the exam.

Do this first

ScenarioHit by car / blunt trauma
Vet vs poison control vs ERER only for trauma with possible internal bleeding. Poison control is not the path unless a toxin was also involved.

Immediate action steps

  • Transport to an ER after any car strike; do not wait for classic bleed signs
  • Note pale gums, weakness, distended abdomen, or collapse if they appear
  • Keep the pet warm and as still as practical
  • Avoid food, water, and home medications
  • Call ahead so the ER can prepare shock care

Signs that scream urgency

Pale or white gums, cold limbs, a rapidly swelling belly, extreme weakness, or collapse suggest shock until proven otherwise.

Restlessness, panting, or a pet that cannot get comfortable can also show pain from internal injury. Trust the mechanism: a car is enough reason to go.

Why normal gums early can mislead

Compensation can keep a pet looking okay until reserves run out. An early ER exam may catch problems while treatment options are wider.

If your clinic offers trauma imaging and monitoring, use it. Home observation is not imaging.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Contact your vet for anything urgent or unclear.

FAQ

Can internal bleeding start hours later?
Yes. That is why pets should be evaluated after car strikes even when the first hour looks calm.
