How to transport a pet hit by a car

Good transport is part of treatment. Goal: spine-aware, warm, and fast.

Do this first

ScenarioHit by car / blunt trauma
Vet vs poison control vs ERThis is a veterinary emergency, not a poison-control case. Call the ER while someone drives. Poison control is only relevant if a toxin was also involved.

Immediate action steps

  • Call the ER so they know you are coming
  • Use a flat support (board, tote lid, sturdy blanket sling)
  • Keep the neck and back aligned as you lift
  • Cover lightly to reduce heat loss and visual stress
  • Have a second person drive while you watch breathing

Improvised stretchers that work

A folding leaf-bag cardboard, baking sheet for tiny pets, or a coat stretched between two people can work when a board is unavailable. Smooth moves beat fancy gear.

Seat-belt the carrier or have a human hold the board. Sudden stops cause second injuries.

What to say when you call ahead

Species, approximate weight, hit by car, consciousness, breathing effort, visible bleeding, and ETA. Short sentences help the triage nurse prepare oxygen and imaging.

If the pet deteriorates on the way, call again. Updated information changes bay readiness.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Contact your vet for anything urgent or unclear.

FAQ

Should I muzzle for the whole car ride?
Only if safe for breathing and the pet is not vomiting. Reassess if breathing worsens — airway comes first.
