First aid is safety and information gathering. Treatment decisions belong to a veterinarian.
| Scenario | Seizure |
|---|---|
| Vet vs poison control vs ER | Call the ER for prolonged, repeated, or first-time seizures, or if the pet does not recover normally. Poison control is important if toxin ingestion (xylitol, chocolate, bait, medications) is suspected as the trigger. Otherwise this is a veterinary neurology or ER workup. |
Start time, end time, and whether more than one event occurred. Video can help if it does not delay safety.
Note triggers: new trash access, heat, missed medication, or head trauma.
Blindness-like wandering and panting can follow. Prevent stair falls.
Offer water only when fully alert and able to swallow normally.
