A first seizure is a reason to call a veterinarian promptly, even if the dog seems fully recovered afterward.
| Scenario | Seizure |
|---|---|
| Vet vs poison control vs ER | Call the ER for prolonged, repeated, or first-time seizures, or if the pet does not recover normally. Poison control is important if toxin ingestion (xylitol, chocolate, bait, medications) is suspected as the trigger. Otherwise this is a veterinary neurology or ER workup. |
The cause might be metabolic, toxic, inflammatory, or idiopathic. Sorting that is clinical work.
Bring a video if you have one, plus medication and trash-access history.
Long, repeated, or poorly recovering seizures belong in the ER. A single brief first seizure with full recovery may be guided by your regular vet the same day — call and ask.
After hours, use the ER if you cannot get live advice.
This is general information, not a diagnosis. Contact your vet for anything urgent or unclear.
