Near-drowning: when to go to the ER

For real submersion events, the ER is the default. Poison control is unrelated in most water cases.

Do this first

ScenarioNear-drowning / water inhalation
Vet vs poison control vs ERNear-drowning is an ER veterinary emergency. Poison control is unrelated unless the water was chemically treated in a way that also caused toxicity (rare; still tell the ER).

Immediate action steps

  • ER after significant near-drowning
  • Call ahead
  • Keep warm and calm during transport
  • Skip poison control unless chemical water exposure is also suspected
  • Do not wait overnight because coughing stopped once

Why “looks fine” fails

Lung injury can declare late. Examination and monitoring catch what a living-room vibe check misses.

Coughing, fast breathing, or lethargy remove any remaining debate.

Pool chemical note

Heavily treated water exposures should be mentioned. Still go for the drowning physiology first.

Rinse fur of irritating chemicals after the airway plan is underway if the pet is stable enough.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Contact your vet for anything urgent or unclear.
