Dog near-drowning: what to do

Rescue, gentle clearing of obvious debris, warmth, and ER evaluation. Looking better is not clearance.

Do this first

ScenarioNear-drowning / water inhalation
Vet vs poison control vs ERNear-drowning is an ER veterinary emergency. Poison control is unrelated unless the water was chemically treated in a way that also caused toxicity (rare; still tell the ER).

Immediate action steps

  • Get the pet to dry land and clear obvious debris from the mouth if visible and easy to remove
  • Keep the neck aligned; avoid shaking
  • Cover with a towel and keep warm
  • Seek emergency care even if the pet coughs once and seems better
  • Do not delay for home observation — fluid in the lungs can worsen later

On the shore

Get to dry land. Clear only visible easy debris from the mouth. Avoid shaking violently.

Cover with a towel and keep the neck aligned as you move to the car.

Why the ER still happens

Fluid in the lungs can worsen later. Aspiration pneumonia risk is real.

Call ahead and say near-drowning so oxygen can be ready.

FAQ

My dog shook off and ran around. Still go?
Yes after a true submersion event. Delayed breathing problems are the concern.
