Immediate action steps
- Apply continuous firm pressure with clean cloth
- Do not keep lifting the cloth to check
- Have someone drive while you hold pressure
- Call the ER on the way
- Keep the dog as still and warm as practical
Recognition
Bright red blood that spurts or pulses with the heartbeat is the pattern people mean by arterial bleeding.
Even without perfect recognition, uncontrolled soak-through bleeding gets the same response.
Do not delay for a perfect bandage

Update triage if the dog becomes weak or gums pale.
