Dog arterial bleeding

Spurting blood is not a debate. Pressure and drive.

Do this first

ScenarioSevere bleeding / laceration
Vet vs poison control vs ERArterial bleeding is ER only. Poison control applies if rodenticide history exists alongside bleeding.

Immediate action steps

  • Apply continuous firm pressure with clean cloth
  • Do not keep lifting the cloth to check
  • Have someone drive while you hold pressure
  • Call the ER on the way
  • Keep the dog as still and warm as practical

Recognition

Bright red blood that spurts or pulses with the heartbeat is the pattern people mean by arterial bleeding.

Even without perfect recognition, uncontrolled soak-through bleeding gets the same response.

Do not delay for a perfect bandage

A hand on a cloth beats a YouTube tourniquet tutorial.

Update triage if the dog becomes weak or gums pale.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Contact your vet for anything urgent or unclear.

FAQ

Should I use a belt as a tourniquet?
Not as a default. Direct pressure is the primary field action unless a clinician directs otherwise.
