Continuous firm pressure beats peeking. Then go — especially for spurting blood or pale gums.

Use clean cloth and press continuously. If soaked, add another layer on top rather than removing the first clot.
Elevate only if it does not worsen pain or a possible fracture.
Pale gums, weakness, rapid breathing, or collapse mean say those words when you call the ER.
Keep the dog warm.
