Pet bleeding: when to go to the ER

Uncontrolled bleeding and shock signs are ER-now. Minor scrapes can be phone-triaged.

Do this first

ScenarioSevere bleeding / laceration
Vet vs poison control vs ERBleeding trauma is an ER or urgent veterinary case, not poison control. Call ahead while applying pressure. Poison control only if rodenticide or another anticoagulant toxin is in the history.

Immediate action steps

  • ER for spurting blood, soak-through pressure dressings, pale gums, or collapse
  • Apply pressure while someone drives
  • Call ahead
  • Mention rodenticide or anticoagulant medication history
  • Skip poison control unless toxin-related bleeding is suspected

ER list

Arterial spurting, large lacerations, bleeding into the belly or chest suspicion, and trauma with bleeding.

Known clotting disorders or bait ingestion plus bleeding: ER.

Possibly urgent-care list

Small cuts that stop with brief pressure in an otherwise bright pet may be guided by your regular vet soon.

When unsure, call an ER nurse and describe the wound.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Contact your vet for anything urgent or unclear.

FAQ

How much blood is too much?
If you are asking while still holding pressure, get live triage. Soak-through and pale gums are practical stop-debating signs.
