Dog choking on rawhide

If breathing is impaired, prioritize ER transport. If the rawhide comes out, still get checked when the episode was serious.

Do this first

ScenarioChoking / airway obstruction
Vet vs poison control vs ERAirway emergencies go to the ER, not poison control. Call the clinic while someone drives. Poison control applies only if a toxin or corrosive was involved in addition to obstruction.

Immediate action steps

  • If the pet is still moving air, keep them calm and go to an ER — do not blindly finger-sweep
  • If the pet collapses and is not breathing, follow veterinary CPR guidance you have been trained on, or get to help immediately
  • Look for visible objects at the front of the mouth only if you can see them clearly
  • Do not pull string or thread that continues into the throat or under the tongue without clinical help
  • Transport carefully with the head supported; call ahead so the ER can prepare oxygen

Softened chunks

Rawhide becomes gluey and awkward. Do not yank blindly from deep in the throat.

Bring a piece of the same rawhide for size reference.

After the scare

Ask your vet about safer chew alternatives.

Mention any blue gum color you saw during the event.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Contact your vet for anything urgent or unclear.
