Dog choking on a ball

Balls sized for the mouth but not the throat are classic. Stay calm and move toward help.

ScenarioChoking / airway obstruction
Vet vs poison control vs ERAirway emergencies go to the ER, not poison control. Call the clinic while someone drives. Poison control applies only if a toxin or corrosive was involved in addition to obstruction.

Immediate action steps

  • Keep the dog as calm as possible if still moving air
  • Do not push the ball deeper with blind fingers
  • If trained and the dog collapses, follow veterinary CPR guidance you know
  • Call the ER and transport immediately
  • Bring a matching ball so they know the size

Why balls are different from crumbs

A smooth ball can act like a plug. Pulling without a plan can seat it worse.

ER teams have tools for these cases — your job is arrival.

Prevention note for later

After the crisis, ask your vet about safer toy sizing. Save that conversation for after the airway is secure.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Contact your vet for anything urgent or unclear.

FAQ

The ball came out and my dog seems fine. Still go?
Yes if there was a serious choking episode. Airways and lungs may still need a check.
