Do this first

ScenarioAcetaminophen (Tylenol) ingestion
Vet vs poison control vs ERTreat as poison control plus veterinary emergency, especially in cats. Call the hotline while arranging ER care. This is not a monitor-at-home toxin when a meaningful dose may have been ingested.

Immediate action steps

  • Secure the bottle; note strength, number of tablets or liquid volume, and time
  • Call pet poison control or an ER immediately — cats are especially sensitive
  • Do not wait for chocolate-colored gums or facial swelling to appear
  • Do not give any more over-the-counter pain relievers
  • Transport with the packaging

More than acetaminophen

Antihistamines or other sleep aids may be included. Each changes triage.

Bring the box, not only the word Tylenol.

Dogs and cats in the same home

Cats contacting the same spill are higher urgency for acetaminophen. Check everyone.

Wipe floors.
