Why this stage is different for Tibetan Mastiffs

The two weeks after a Tibetan Mastiff whelps are a medical watch, not a photo shoot. Eclampsia, metritis, mastitis, and hypoglycemia in toy neonates are time-critical. Lactation calories can double or triple maintenance. Weigh the dam and each puppy daily. If this breed carries hypothyroidism and hip dysplasia, anesthesia leftovers from C-section, airway compromise, or orthopedic pain will stack on top of nursing load.

Dam and neonate red flags

• Tremors, restlessness, stiffness, or fever in the damurgent

Weaning-era timeline

1. 0-48 h

   Colostrum window

   Confirm every puppy nurses. Tube-feed only with veterinary instruction.

2. Day 3-7

   Peak eclampsia risk

   Especially small Tibetan Mastiffs with large litters. Keep the emergency clinic number on the whelping box.

3. Wk 2-3

   Peak milk demand

   Free-choice or many small meals of lactation diet. Water always available.

4. Wk 3-4

   Start weaning gruel

   Reduce dam calories as puppies eat more, or mastitis risk rises.

5. Wk 6-8

   Wean + dam diet reset

   Return the dam toward adult calories. Schedule her postpartum exam and this litter’s vaccine start.
