Growth-to-adult transitiongiant breed
The awkward middle: calories, calcium, and training fuel for a Presa Canario between puppyhood and adult weight (84-110 lb).
Clinical context
Adolescence is when Presa Canario owners either lock in a lean athlete or a lifelong weight problem. Growth plates close near 18-24 months. Giant breeds should stay lean through the growth window; never “push” weight to look finished. Keep protein high enough for muscle, calories low enough that the waist stays. This is also when hip dysplasia and cardiac screening first becomes visible on exam - diet notes belong next to orthopedic and cardiac screening.

Dated protocol
5-7 mo
Adolescent hunger is not a portion size. Weigh every 2 weeks.
8-10 mo
A bored Presa Canario looks “starving.” Increase scent work, not kibble.
18-24 months
Transition food over 7-10 days. Log any itch or stool change.
Adult
Photograph the successful adult formula. Future allergy trials need a known baseline.

Keep large-breed growth diets until the vet agrees plates are closed.
Free-feeding hides intake. Use a gram scale.
SERP-ready clinical FAQ
Behaviorally yes. Skeletal growth for this size class continues until about 18-24 months. Diet and jump control should stay conservative until then.
Supplements are not a substitute for lean body condition and controlled exercise. Ask your veterinarian; extra calcium can harm large-breed growth.
