Why this stage is different for Afghan Hounds

Even companion Afghan Hounds can be working dogs if they hike, run, or do sport. Fueling is not “more kibble.” It is timing, water, and GI tolerance. Extra fat on a rest day becomes weight. Under-fueling on a trial day becomes a medical event. Keep a session log (duration, temperature, stool, water) next to the diet so a sports veterinarian can see the pattern.

1. Rest day

   Maintenance calories

   Drop the sport toppers. This is how Afghan Hounds stay in the 50-60 lb band.

2. T-3 h

   Pre-work meal

   Easily digested meal. Avoid high fat immediately before intense work.

3. During

   Water first

   Offer water frequently. Electrolyte products are not automatic - GI upset is common.

4. T+30 min

   Recovery

   Small meal after cool-down. Watch for collapse, brick-red gums, or unproductive retching.

5. Weekly

   Audit

   If stools fall apart only on work days, the fuel - not a mystery allergy - is the suspect.
