Rat poison symptoms in dogs

Symptoms depend on the ingredient. Do not wait for a textbook bleed if bromethalin or another class was involved.

Do this first

ScenarioRodenticide (rat/mouse bait) ingestion
Vet vs poison control vs ERAlways call poison control first when the bait type is unknown — anticoagulant, bromethalin, cholecalciferol, and zinc phosphide require different plans. Then follow clinic or ER instructions. Bleeding, seizures, or sudden collapse means ER now.

Immediate action steps

  • Secure remaining bait and keep the package or active-ingredient label
  • Note which bait block or pellet type and when it was eaten
  • Call pet poison control immediately — active ingredients change the treatment path
  • Do not induce vomiting unless a clinician tells you to
  • Go to a veterinarian or ER as directed; some baits need urgent vitamin K or other care

Why one symptom list fails

Anticoagulant baits may show bruising or bleeding later. Bromethalin can look neurologic. Cholecalciferol can affect calcium and kidneys.

That is why the package is part of first aid.

When signs mean the ER regardless

Collapse, labored breathing, seizures, uncontrolled bleeding, or extreme lethargy are ER-now signs.

Bring the bait. If you cannot, still go.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Contact your vet for anything urgent or unclear.

FAQ

No symptoms after 12 hours means safe?
Not necessarily. Some bait classes have delayed signs. Follow poison-control timing for that ingredient.
