Pet eye injury: when to go to the ER

Proptosis, chemical burns, deep puncture, and sudden blindness lean ER. Simple squints still need prompt care.

Do this first

ScenarioEye injury
Vet vs poison control vs EREye trauma and chemical exposure are veterinary emergencies or same-day urgent cases. Poison control may advise on chemical ID, but the pet still needs ocular exam. Sudden blindness or a prolapsed eye is ER now.

Immediate action steps

  • ER for prolapsed eye, strong chemical splash, deep puncture, or sudden blindness
  • Same-day vet for squinting, cloudiness, or discharge after injury
  • Prevent rubbing
  • Bring chemical bottles
  • Poison control only for chemical ID support

ER list

Eye out of socket, bleeding inside the eye after trauma, chemical corrosives, and penetrating stick injuries.

After-hours squinting with severe pain also belongs in emergency care.

Why delays cost vision

Corneas can melt and perforate. Hours matter more than owners expect.

Store your ER number before you need it.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Contact your vet for anything urgent or unclear.

FAQ

Can urgent care see eyes?
If they have ocular diagnostics and can refer fast, maybe. Ask when you call. Otherwise use the ER.
