Pet choking: when to go to the ER

Breathing emergencies default to the ER. Poison control is not the airway team.

Do this first

ScenarioChoking / airway obstruction
Vet vs poison control vs ERAirway emergencies go to the ER, not poison control. Call the clinic while someone drives. Poison control applies only if a toxin or corrosive was involved in addition to obstruction.

Immediate action steps

  • ER now if breathing is labored, gums look blue, or the pet collapses
  • Call ahead for oxygen readiness
  • Skip poison control unless a toxin or corrosive is also involved
  • Bring the object if recovered
  • Do not delay for a primary-care callback

After the object is out

Even successful home dislodgement can leave airway swelling or aspiration risk. Get checked.

Tell the ER how long the obstruction lasted.

Partial obstruction

A pet that can still squeak air may worsen suddenly. Do not wait at home for complete blockage.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Contact your vet for anything urgent or unclear.
