Indoor cat urinary blockage

Indoor status does not protect against blockage. Watch the box after stress or diet changes.

Do this first

ScenarioCat urinary blockage
Vet vs poison control vs ERThis is an ER veterinary emergency, not poison control. Blocked cats can become critically ill within hours. Call the clinic while you drive.

Immediate action steps

  • Treat repeated litter-box trips with little or no urine as an emergency in male cats especially
  • Note straining, crying, licking the penis, vomiting, or hiding
  • Do not give pain medications meant for humans
  • Call an ER or your veterinarian immediately and prepare to transport
  • Bring a urine sample only if it does not delay leaving

Triggers people notice later

New pets, moved litter boxes, dirty boxes, and diet shifts often appear in histories.

Prevention talks happen after the ER saves the cat.

Multi-cat households

Know which cat used which box if you can. Camera notes help later — not during collapse.

If one cat is missing from normal social spots, check the box and belly pain signs.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Contact your vet for anything urgent or unclear.

FAQ

Prescription diet prevents all blockage?
Diets can help some cats. They do not make straining safe to ignore.
