Electric shock symptoms in dogs

Burns and a yelp may be first. Breathing changes hours later are why monitoring happens at a clinic.

ScenarioElectric cord shock
Vet vs poison control vs ERElectric shock is an ER veterinary emergency. Poison control is not the primary contact. Call the ER while transporting.

Immediate action steps

  • Shut off power at the breaker or unplug the cord without touching the pet if still in contact
  • Do not pull a pet off a live cord with bare hands
  • Check breathing and gum color; keep the airway clear
  • Look for burns in the mouth; avoid forcing food or water
  • Go to an ER even if the pet seems recovered — lung complications can lag

Immediate signs

Yelp, jump away, oral burns, temporary weakness, or collapse.

Resuscitative needs are ER-now if breathing or heartbeat seem absent — get help.

Delayed signs

Coughing, fast breathing, or lethargy can appear later. That is why recovered pets still get evaluated.

Note the time of the shock for the clinician.

This is general information, not a diagnosis. Contact your vet for anything urgent or unclear.

FAQ

How long can lung problems take?
They can lag after the event. Follow ER monitoring advice rather than a single internet hour count.
