Cats eat chocolate less often than dogs, but when they do, you still treat it as a toxin call — not a wait-and-see snack.
| Scenario | Chocolate ingestion |
|---|---|
| Vet vs poison control vs ER | Call poison control for dose context and your vet for a cat-specific plan. Cats often hide discomfort; do not wait for dramatic dog-like hyperactivity. ER for neurologic signs, severe lethargy, or known large exposures. |
Cats may show quieter lethargy, hiding, or reduced appetite rather than frantic pacing. That does not mean the exposure is harmless.
Chocolate desserts can also include raisins, coffee, or sugar-free sweeteners. List every ingredient you know.
Use a secure carrier. Bring the package. If the cat is open-mouth breathing or extremely weak, call the ER so they can meet you at the door.
Do not force water or milk. Do not give activated charcoal unless a clinician directs the exact product and dose.
